What to Know About Whitening

A recent study by Philips Sonicare and USA Today revealed that, for 47 percent of people, the first thing they notice when they meet you is your smile. No pressure there or anything, right? Unless, of course, your smile isn’t quite as white as it could be. Thankfully, if that describes you, there’s plenty you can do about it – from whitening toothpastes to professional whitening treatments and even veneers, there’s no shortage of solutions to give you a bright, white, healthy-looking smile. Could the TruthBrush Improve on the Toothbrush?

An estimated 268.73 million Americans use manual toothbrushes – at least according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But despite this overwhelming majority (only 101.4 million Americans use electric toothbrushes), very little innovation has been made in the manual toothbrush field since its first design in 1498. But now, a new invention from Cambridge Design Partnership is aiming to change that. It’s called the TruthBrush, and it was designed with a very specific purpose.

Where Did Our Teeth Come From?

Our teeth are pretty amazing things, aren’t they? But have you ever stopped to think about just how fascinating they really are? They’re exposed bones that grow in, fall out and then grow in again. They finish developing when we're in our teens, but with proper care can last the entire rest of our life. The same teeth we get at around age 6 will be with us until we’re 96. Think of all the smiles they’ll make and foods they’ll chew in that time. When you really put it into perspective, teeth are incredible – but believe it or not, they’re even cooler than you may have realized. Teeth and their fascinating history are the subject of a new TED-Ed video by Pete Unger titled "How Did Teeth Evolve?"

All About Veneers

A New Adhesive Could Prevent a Common Braces Problem

When orthodontic patients finally get to experience the relief and joy of getting their braces removed, most have a few expectations: that their teeth will be straight, their bite will be adjusted, and their smile will finally be something they can be proud to show off. But while this best-case scenario is a common one, in many cases, patients get a little more than they bargained for. That’s because for some patients, the adhesive used to mount the braces brackets to the teeth leaves behind an unpleasant reminder of the orthodontic treatment in the form of tooth stains.

A Popular Injectable Drug Could Help Stop Bruxism

For the approximately 10 percent of Americans who suffer from the condition known as bruxism, or teeth grinding, relief can often be hard to come by. While it is unknown exactly what causes bruxism, many factors, including stress, anxiety, and psychological and genetic factors, could be to blame. Currently the most common and effective way to treat bruxism is with a mouth guard or night guard. Unfortunately, despite their effectiveness, many people with bruxism either cannot afford a mouth guard, or simply forget or choose not to wear it.

New Dental Material Could Improve Fillings

Plaque. Bacteria. Food residue. Our teeth come in contact with a host of cavity-causing materials throughout the day. For healthy teeth that are cleaned properly, most of these intruders are no big deal, but for teeth that are already weakened due to improper care, damage or enamel defects, these oral intruders can really take their toll. But now, a new dental material under development at the University of Pennsylvania may help take some of the power away from those nasty outsiders - and it could change the future of oral health.

Everything to Know Before Whitening Teeth

For some people, the pursuit of whiter teeth can be a bit of an obsession. From toothpastes and gums that promise to whiten while you use them to trendy all-natural treatments like charcoal and turmeric, it seems like people are willing to try just about anything. But while these treatments may not get the kind of results you’re hoping for, at least you’re not out a lot of money. The danger happens when patients begin investing tons of money into products like white strips, over-the-counter trays and those special lights you hold in your mouth to help accelerate whitening. Are Your Teeth Cleaner Than a Monkey’s Teeth?

Generally speaking, when someone likens your behavior to that of an animal, it’s not a compliment. But that may not ring true for one particular barrel of monkeys from Great Nicobar Island in India. The monkeys are long-tailed macaques, and they are said to have impeccable dental hygiene that rivals even the most hygienic of humans. A study conducted by scientists at the Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History in Coimbatore, India, followed approximately 20 monkeys to observe their eating habits. But it wasn’t what the monkeys ate that left the scientists surprised - it was what they did after eating.
