All About Veneers

Is your smile dull, stained or discolored? Are your teeth broken, crooked or misshapen? You may be an excellent candidate for porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that permanently adhere to the front-facing surface of the teeth. Though they are similar to dental crowns in that they are made of the same material and cover a large surface of the tooth, the similarities between veneers and crowns end there. Here’s everything you need to know about porcelain veneers!

How long does it take to get veneers installed?
Veneers can be attached to the teeth in just a few minutes, and getting a full set of veneers can be done in one appointment. The longest part of the veneers process is the selection, during which you and Dr. Hill will select the shape and color of the veneers that will go on each tooth.

Will insurance cover my veneers?
It depends on your policy, and why you are getting veneers. In some cases, they can be covered, but in others they are considered an elective cosmetic procedure, not a medical procedure and would not qualify for insurance coverage. Check with your individual insurance plan, or call Dr. Hill’s office and we can check your coverage.

Will my veneers look natural?
Veneers can look as natural (or as artificial) as you want them to. That’s because you can choose the shape, size and color of your veneers before you have them installed, creating a customized look that’s as unique as your individual smile.

How long will my veneers last?
Many patients wonder how long they can expect their veneers to last. The answer is, it depends on many factors. First of all, it depends on if the veneers were installed properly in the first place. If they have been installed properly, they should have no trouble staying on the tooth, and provided they are treated with care, veneers can last many years.

Do veneers require special care?
Most veneers will not require any special care, but they will last longer with common sense. Veneers should hold up well under normal conditions like brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and chewing food and gum. But they probably won’t hold up under stress like tooth grinding or using your teeth for things they shouldn’t be used for, like tug of war with your dog or opening a bottle! As long as you take care of your dental veneers as you would your natural teeth, you should get a lot of mileage out of them - and they should still look as great as they did the day they were attached.

Can veneers fall off?
Yes, unfortunately, veneers can fall off your teeth. This can happen for a number of reasons, from reckless use to improper fit or installation. If your veneer does fall off, don’t panic! If the veneer is still intact when it falls out, there is a good chance it can be easily reattached. If you do lose a veneer, call Dr. Hill’s office as soon as possible to have it reattached or to have a new veneer placed.

A word of caution: If your veneer does fall off, do not under any circumstances try to permanently adhere it to your natural tooth yourself. Before you attempt to use an at-home crown reattachment kit, give Dr. Hill a call just to be safe, but do not - repeat, do not - try adhering the veneer with glue, epoxy or any other type of adhesive you may have lying around.

Before your veneer is reattached, the tooth should be examined to make sure it is still healthy and not damaged. From there, we will use a special solution to help roughen the tooth again so that the adhesive holds better, and then the veneer will be reattached using an adhesive that is safe for teeth, and done by a dental professional who knows how to properly place a veneer.
